properties comparison between hardfacing and casting wear resistant parts

So far, we have two kinds of materials to make vertical mill table and rollers, casting and hardfaced welding method. The wear resistant layer chemical compositions of these two materials are high carbon high chromium alloy cast iron series. Casting parts contains a certain amount of Ni elements, the cause of their differences in wear resistance are their microstructure distribution and properties.

In the microstructure of hardfaced welding parts, the microhardness of ledeburite matrix is approx HV623 - 891, and the carbides in the matrix has good directional, which is perpendicular to the wear surface and has high bonding strength with the matrix. However, the casting parts ledeburite matrix is very low and are randomly distributed, which may be easily removed from the matrix under the action of abrasive particles

In conclusion, on the one hand macrohardness of casting and hardfacing parts are different, casting parts hardness is HRC52-58 but hardfacing parts hardness is HRC58-64, on the other hand, because of the difference of distribution of carbides in the matrix, service lifetime of casting parts is much lower than hardfacing parts. Therefore, parts with hardfaced welding can work much more better than casting parts on process, inner quality, repair and economy.
